The Desires of Your Heart

In our women's bible study, we are currently reading the book by Martha Peace entitled, The Excellent Wife.

Our chapter for the month is about the desires of our hearts.  But, before I tell you about the book and the reason for this post, let me say this.

This morning, while my children slept peacefully in their beds, I watched the movie, The Blind Side.  If you haven't seen it, I would recommend it.  It does have language in it and it's NOT a christian movie.  In fear of giving away the plot, I linked to a page that will give you info on the movie if you so choose to know more about it.

No matter how hard I pray, from a small child, I have always wanted to adopt.  I used to actually think that God would not permit me to have children and that I would have to adopt.  But, in His infinite knowledge, He blessed me with 2 wonderful children- a girl and a boy.  Since, I have one of each gender I should be well satisfied, right?  Sort of.  My heart's desire is to still adopt one day.

My question is: Does God always grant us our heart's desires?  If we are wanting something that would glorify Him, would or should He grant us our "wishes"?  Let's say someone wants to become a minister or preacher (like my husband told me after we had been married for 10 years).  In our case, God has blessed our family and we are now on our journey with a beautiful congregation for almost 3 years now.

What if someone wants to be a nurse?  A mom, let's say.  The bible teaches that women are supposed to be "workers at home."  Is it biblical to be a woman nurse, called by God?  One who leaves her home to care for others and leave her children in the care of others, like the public school system?  Homeschooling is another topic in which I will not go into now as to not having the time.

Adopting?  What about my heart's desire?  Can we justify that just because we have this overwhelming desire to do something which is sooo good for others, how can it be bad?  Surely it's from the Lord.  Surely God put those desires in our heart, right?  Or is it right?

I cannot answer that question for you.  Only God can answer whether or not he will give you the desires of your heart.  If they are for His glory, pray about it and I will to.  May God bless you with your heart's desires that you may bless others with His glory and kindness!
